This poem is on something I feel very strongly about, rape and gender equality.

If you haven’t already, I urge you to watch “India’s daughter”, a documentary broadcast by the BBC. It is  shocking, moving and at times a real eye opener.

Remember the way
Your mother took you in her arms
The way her eyes lit up
As your face betrayed signs of joy.
The way she stayed up all night
Caressed your burning forehead
Convinced you it was just a matter of time.
Remember the way
She gave her life up for you.
Only for you to take the life of another.

Remember her face
As the night engulfs you
Remember her voice
As she screams out for help.
Remember her eyes
As tears mix with her blood.
Remember, that she is a woman
Just like your mother.

Remember the way
Your sister smiled in her dreams
The way your heart broke to pieces
As she cried on the floor.
The way you laughed in the sunset
Sitting side by side
Bathed in dust, with your spirits soaring.
Remember the way
You swore she would never be hurt
When you curse another with a lifetime of pain.

Remember her face
As you transform into anger
Remember her voice
As she begs for mercy
Remember her eyes
As hers slowly lose consciousness
Remember, that she is no older
Than your own sister.

Remember the way
Your grandmother sat you in her lap
The way she would take you to lands
Far from your own.
The way one grim look,
Would send you into a frenzy
Make you plead for forgiveness for what you had done.
Remember the way
You could picture nobody purer
When you defile her mind with a blood stained heart.

Remember her face
As you sit all alone
Remember her voice
As silence echoes in your heart
Remember her eyes
As the devil looks into yours
Remember,
And repent for the horror you have caused.
